MEN ON THE MOON

May 29, 2018

The Apollo 11 spaceflight was the first ever to land three humans on the moon. American astronauts Michael Collins, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed their lunar module, Eagle, atop the surface of the moon on July 20, 1969. Neil and Buzz would soon walk and leave footprints behind on lunar soil. A few key historic phrases have stayed with us from this mission: “Houston, Tranquility base here. The Eagle has landed.” And, after placing the American flag on the surface of the moon, Buzz Aldrin said, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” The image above, by illustrator Joseph Qiu, captures the excitement the astronauts created on TV in front of millions of people around the world. Compelling historical content coupled with captivating illustration is a great way to capture and engage the minds of today’s students. Recently, Jake Murray was asked to illustrate some historical artwork for Storyworks, a magazine by the publishers at Scholastic. As you can see, the image below tells of the drama, intrigue and fear that captivated the world during Hitler’s reign and a boy who worked to stop him. FUN-A-DAY HEROES

Illustrator Mark Collins recently participated in a large group show at the Delaware Contemporary Museum. The event, called FUN-A-DAY, had over 200 artists creating a small piece of art, no larger than 5”x7”, for each day of March. Mark’s chosen theme was an anti-war tribute to the heroes that make up our US Veterans. Each of the 31 illustrations portrayed a soldier in varying activity, emotion and climate. Poor Ty, a cute little turtle, feels the same way as the other animals in the forest tease and belittle him. Apparently, the ants had felt the same way before, and we all know they can lift 5,000 times their body weight! And that is what he did, time and time again, thus becoming a hero to us all! Created by Charles Schulz, who dreamt of becoming a cartoonist. Much to our delight, his dream came true. TELLING THE HARRIET TUBMAN STORY

For more than a decade, Harriet Tubman safely escorted more than 300 slaves to freedom. Born into slavery, prior to her rescue mission, she was a cook, nurse, and even a spy. A portion of Tubman’s story is illustrated here for Scholastic by Jake Murray. Illustrator Syd Weiler created this image for the Wall Street Journal. Apparently, a year that ends in 18, plus an address with an 8, or a price with an 8 brings prosperity, and realtors are loving this lucky new year. Merkur, the magazine of the Chamber of Commerce in Luxembourg, has just been honored with an Award of Excellence from the International Creative Media Award (ICMA), a competition for quality, creativity and design in the field of international publishing. Gracing the covers for over 2 years, and now on for the third year running is illustrator, Brian Miller of Orlin Culture Shop, LLC. This award recognizes Miller for his amazing work. “Brian has illustrated more than a dozen covers and his work, in all remarkable points, delights us at each new edition.
