Neil and Buzz would soon walk and leave footprints behind on lunar soil. A few key historic phrases have stayed with us from this mission: “Houston, Tranquility base here. The Eagle has landed.” And, after placing the American flag on the surface of the moon, Buzz Aldrin said, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” The image above, by illustrator Joseph Qiu, captures the excitement the astronauts created on TV in front of millions of people around the world.
