MEN ON THE MOON

The Apollo 11 spaceflight was the first ever to land three humans on the moon. American astronauts Michael Collins, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed their lunar module, Eagle, atop the surface of the moon on July 20, 1969. Neil and Buzz would soon walk and leave footprints behind on lunar soil. A few key historic phrases have stayed with us from this mission: “Houston, Tranquility base here. The Eagle has landed.” And, after placing the American flag on the surface of the moon, Buzz Aldrin said, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” The image above, by illustrator Joseph Qiu, captures the excitement the astronauts created on TV in front of millions of people around the world. Illustrator Mark Collins recently participated in a large group show at the Delaware Contemporary Museum. The event, called FUN-A-DAY, had over 200 artists creating a small piece of art, no larger than 5”x7”, for each day of March. Mark’s chosen theme was an anti-war tribute to the heroes that make up our US Veterans. Each of the 31 illustrations portrayed a soldier in varying activity, emotion and climate. TELLING THE HARRIET TUBMAN STORY

For more than a decade, Harriet Tubman safely escorted more than 300 slaves to freedom.
Born into slavery, prior to her rescue mission, she was a cook, nurse, and even a spy. A portion of Tubman’s story is illustrated here for Scholastic by Jake Murray. The hefty and prestigious CA annual just hit the stands, and we are proud to announce that Brian Miller/Orlin Culture Shop has a winning piece in the Poster section of the 58th Advertising Annual. Brian had the wonderful opportunity to illustrate one of five winning posters in a series for client, Radio Flyer, LLC. Collaborating with ad agency, FCB Chicago, Brian created Ninja Moose Canyon. Smokey Bear!
In honor of his birthday, and in tandem with the Ad Council, the US Forest Service, and the National Association of State Foresters, our own Brian Miller/Orlin Culture Shop was selected as one of the illustrators to depict Smokey Bear in his own style. The campaign is all about raising awareness of some of the lesser known causes of wildfires. Apparently 90% of forest fires are cause by humans. Take a look, study up and protect the forest. The Zika virus, also known as Zika fever is an epidemic outbreak that is spread primarily by the female daytime active Aedes mosquitoes. The name originates from the Zika Forest in Uganda where the virus was first isolated way back in 1947. Biomedical artists Sharon & Joel Harris from Articulate Graphics illustrated the striking mosquito during pathogenesis. Don’t worry, no one has gotten ill from this illustration.

Jake’s piece “Under the Pyramids” was for a box cover commissioned by Fantasy Flight Games for an expansion in their Lovecraftian horror line of tabletop games, “Eldritch Horror.” Jake is the second artist with work nominated from our group (see below).

Illustrator Jake Murray was fortunate enough to work on this dramatic cover for Tor Books for collaborating authors Larry Niven and Steven Barnes. The Seascape Tattoo is one of several collaborations between Nivens and Barnes and the first time Jake was tapped to add his illustration skills to the mix.

During this time of year, we do inventory on all that makes us grateful. We were so grateful to work on a project earlier this year for the Yale New Haven Hospital. Laura Watson created four fun illustrations depicting a child’s journey. The art is hanging in the pediatric part of the hospital in hopes of offering cheer to the sick little ones.
